Liner Notes
Family's first Reprise single appeared on 5 July 1968, two weeks ahead of the parent album, as a taster for Music in a Doll's House. The Chapman / Whitney A-side and the brass-propelled 'Hey Mr. Policeman' were both pulled straight from the forthcoming LP. Produced by Dave Mason and Jimmy Miller; issued only in the UK, where it nudged the Record Retailer 'Breakers' list but missed the Top 50.
Rick Sanders in Beat Instrumental (September 1968) framed it as a foundation rather than a chart play: "'Me My Friend' and 'Hey Mr. Policeman' have been put out as a single release. The record hasn't exactly stormed up the charts but it's laid the foundation for future success, though the group prefer the wider, less restricted format of album work. Singles are really an extra." That single-as-LP-taster pattern would carry through the band's next four singles cycles — No Mule's Fool (1969), Strange Band (1970), In My Own Time (1971). Me My Friend — Disc and Music Echo single review
Contemporary single review. Disc and Music Echo approached “Me My Friend” as the record that would introduce many listeners to a group already attracting strong word of mouth. Dave Mason’s production was immediately audible to the reviewer, who heard a pronounced Traffic character in the arrangement.
The notice was brief and cautious rather than ecstatic, but its conclusion was clear: the single was genuinely interesting and marked Family as a group worth following.
