The GroovesLiner Notes
Released on Acrobat through Arista, Chappo was recorded at Startling Studios in Ascot and Marquee Studios in London, mixed at AIR Studios, and produced by David Courtney. It established the varied blues, soul and rock approach Chapman would take into the Shortlist.
Personnel included Henry Spinetti on drums; Dave Markee and Brian Odgers on bass; Billy Livsey on keyboards; Geoff Whitehorn and Micky Moody on guitars; Ron Aspery on saxophone; Pete Hope-Evans on harmonica; Ray Cooper and Simon Morton on percussion; and Poli Palmer on electric vibes for “Always Gotta Pay in the End.” Joy Yates, Vicki Brown, Jimmy Chambers and George Chandler supplied backing vocals.

Chappo — Rip It Up review
Duncan Campbell heard Chappo as a genuine fresh start rather than another variation on Family or Streetwalkers. The review praised Chapman’s unmistakable voice, the album’s R&B pull and, above all, the enthusiasm in the performances.

Moth to a Flame — box-set review
Box-set review. The review presents Moth to a Flame as a strong account of Chapman’s first solo phase: Chappo, Live in Hamburg and Mail Order Magic, expanded with BBC material, demos, outtakes and further live recordings.
Particular praise goes to Mail Order Magic. Despite the label and recording difficulties surrounding it, the album is described as powerful and packed with memorable Chapman material. The additional Hamburg performance is rougher than the official live album, but that lack of polish is treated as part of its excitement rather than a weakness.
