Hybrid and Lowdown — Plattenbesprechungen review
Retrospective review. Markus hears Hybrid and Lowdown as an uneasy mixture of pop, rock, rock and roll, blues and funk whose range never quite becomes a coherent identity. Much of the album strikes him as quickly assembled and lacking the force of Chapman’s stronger work.
Even so, the review identifies several exceptions. “Beautifully Indecent” and “Someone Else’s Clothes” are selected as the two most worthwhile songs, with “House Behind the Sun” also recommended. The final score is 6/15: a distinctly negative verdict, but one that offers a useful counterweight to catalogue descriptions and places the record in the uneven middle of Chapman’s later solo work.
