Liner Notes

Roger Chapman released Under No Obligation in Germany and Europe on 24 February 1992. His tenth solo studio album was produced by Mike Vernon and introduced guitarist Laurie Wisefield as a major writing and performing partner. The long supporting tour included Chapman's fiftieth-birthday concert in Cologne and a welcome return to British stages.

Produced at Brand New Records Production for Summerhaze Music. Recorded at Snake Ranch and Joe's Garage Recording Studio, London.

Under No Obligation — EB/Metronom reviewEB/Metronom · 1992

Contemporary review. Dieter Wolf suggests that a new Chapman album scarcely needs an introduction: the immediately recognizable voice is the event. He describes the throaty vibrato as fragments of sound that only become a song when they meet the instruments around it.

By this stage, Wolf argues, Chapman has become less a conventional frontman than the personification of that voice. His two selections from the album are “Dance Hall Years” and “Sweet Legacy.”
