Roger Chapman released Walking the Cat in Germany in June 1989. His eighth solo studio album, produced by Byron Byrd, moved back toward a rawer blues and R&B sound after Techno-Prisoners. It entered the German album chart on 26 June and remained listed for twelve weeks; that chart entry establishes the month but is not treated as an exact release day.
The sessions included Alvin Lee, Mick Rogers, Bob Tench, Micky Moody, Steve Simpson, Tim Hinkley, Mark Feltham and Nick Pentelow.

Contemporary spotlight. Writing as Walking the Cat entered the German chart, Robert Lyng places the album within Chapman’s twenty years of recording and describes it as a return to his gutsy form of rock and roll.
Lyng highlights the rhythm-and-blues weight of the album and its experienced British cast, including Byron Byrd, John “Poli” Palmer, Alvin Lee and Bob Tench. “Son of Red Moon,” the first single, is presented as the clearest demonstration of the record’s energy and Chapman’s continuing vocal power. The piece also notes the unusual shape of Chapman’s career by this point: a British rock veteran whose strongest contemporary audience and record-company support were in Germany.
