Stud
Stud was the band built around guitarist Jim Cregan (ex-Blossom Toes) and the rhythm section of Richard McCracken (bass) and John Wilson (drums) — both fresh out of Rory Gallagher's Taste, where they'd been when that band split in October 1970. The original three-piece cut their self-titled debut Stud for Deram in 1971.
When John Weider left Family in June 1971 he joined Stud, expanding the band to a quartet and giving them a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, piano, violin, vocals) to expand their range. The Weider/Cregan twin-guitar lineup recorded September (1972) and the live album Goodbye: Live at Command Studios (recorded at the Edgware Road studio in March 1972 and released later the same year). Both 1972 LPs went out on Deram in the UK and BASF in Germany — the German distribution gave them a real touring audience there, and September in particular sold steadily.
The band's twin-guitar incarnation was short-lived. Cregan left mid-1972 to join Family for It's Only A Movie; the rest of Stud wound down soon after. Weider's later assessment was characteristically blunt: "Stud was a good idea that never came to fruition."
After the split, McCracken later joined Axis Point with Charlie Whitney and Rob Townsend; Wilson briefly played with The Edgar Broughton Band; Weider went on to Moonrider with Keith West and his solo Anchor LP John Weider (1976). The band remains one of the more under-documented near-supergroups of the early-1970s British scene.
