In Memoriam: John “Poli” Palmer (1943–2025)

In Memoriam: John “Poli” Palmer (1943–2025)

We are saddened to announce the passing of John Michael “Poli” Palmer, who passed away on 21 July 2025 at the age of 82. A true multi‑instrumentalist, Poli enriched Family’s sound from late 1969 to the early 1970s, playing vibraphone, flute, keyboards, piano, synthesizers, and more on the albums A Song for Me, Anyway, Fearless, and Bandstand.

Before joining Family, he played with pioneering groups like The Hellions, Deep Feeling, and Blossom Toes, and later lent his talents to artists including Peter Frampton, Pete Townshend, Kevin Ayers, and Roger Chapman, among others.

His solo album, Human Error (1985), showcased his innovative spirit, and he also composed the rock opera Hero (1976). In later years, he joined Family’s reunion tours from 2013 to 2016, revisiting the music that first brought him prominence.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family, especially Anna, as well as to his friends and fans across the world. Please feel welcome to leave your memories or favorite performances in the comments below.

Rest in peace, Poli — thank you for the music.
