We are saddened to confirm the passing of John Weider, Family’s bassist, guitarist, and violinist from 1969 to 1971. John died in Los Angeles in March 2025, aged 77, a fact later confirmed by his family through the British Embassy and the Los Angeles Coroner’s office.
John’s melodic bass lines, deft acoustic guitar, and soaring violin helped shape A Song for Me (1970) and Anyway (1970) into the adventurous classics we still celebrate today. His playing was central to the band’s hit single “In My Own Time,” and his fearless musicianship left a lasting mark on Family’s peak years.
Before joining Family, John was known for his work with Eric Burdon & The Animals, joining them on international tours in the late 1960s. After leaving Family in 1971, he explored jazz-rock and new-age music. He briefly worked with Moonrider (alongside Keith West) and later released a string of solo albums: John Weider (1976), Intervals in Sunlight(1987), Essence (1989), and Ancients Weep (1990).
Though he pursued many musical directions after the Family years, it is his contributions during that vital period that continue to inspire fans and musicians alike.

I interviewed John when he was in Shenandoah at the end of the Seventies. Very nice bloke. Knew a bit about his background (Animals, Family, Moonrider – a great supergroup which also featured Keith West and Bruce Thomas (formerly Sutherland Brothers and Quiver, later Elvis Costello) but didn’t know he was originally in a band with Steve Marriott (I would have loved to have asked him about that).
Does anyone know where he is buried. I know he was Jewish (as I am) so I’m wondering if he is buried at Eden Memorial Park in the San Fernando Valley.
