1963

3 recorded events from 1963.

The Farinas developed from an art-school group into a working Leicester R&B act. A three-track acetate cut at Victor Buckland’s VB Sound Studio in Derby survives in the discographical record as VB/SP 81/82, while confirmed bookings at Leicester’s Casino and March’s Marcam Hall begin the surviving live diary. Tim Kirchin was on bass during this phase; the sparse record is acknowledged rather than filled with invented dates.

May 19631 event

14
Tuesday
Casino
James King and the Farinas
London Road, Leicester, Leicestershire, England
Mecca / Rank's Casino Ballroom on London Road, a short walk from Leicester railway station. 14 May 1963 was a Tuesday — consistent with the venue's weekday R&B-night slot (a lower-fee slot than the prime Friday / Saturday dances). No supports or audience figures recorded; the Casino would become the Farinas' most-played Leicester room across 1963-65, appearing repeatedly on Mecca's club-residency Fridays.

August 19631 event

The Marcam Hall
James King and the Farinas
March, Cambridgeshire, England
Ken Wallis and Fred Manchett's former-Regent-cinema conversion in March, Cambs — one of East Cambridgeshire's principal R&B-circuit Saturday-night rooms until fire destroyed the building on 31 December 1965. The Farinas would return here in April 1964 and again in October 1965 for a support slot to the Walker Brothers. No specific supports preserved for this date; the Wallis family's Marcam booking ledger is the primary source.

VB Sound Studio

41–49 London Road, Derby, Derbyshire, England

The Farinas recorded a three-track acetate at Victor Buckland’s VB Sound Studio in Derby: “All You Gotta Do,” “Twist and Shout” and “Bye Bye Johnny.” The surviving discographical record and label image identify the private catalogue as VB/SP 81/82. Buckland opened the London Road premises in September 1962, ruling out the former June 1962 date; the available evidence supports 1963 but not an exact recording day.
