1981

47 recorded events from 1981.

Roger Chapman and the Shortlist dominate the surviving live record, building a large German audience through the Hyenas Only Laugh for Fun campaign and the autumn tour captured at Hamburg's Markthalle. Beyond Chapman, John Wetton began Asia with Steve Howe, Geoff Downes and Carl Palmer, while Jim Cregan remained a central guitarist, writer and co-producer in Rod Stewart's band.

Rockpalast — Hagen
Roger Chapman & The Shortlist
Hagen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
Rockpalast engagement distinct from the October 1981 Grugahalle broadcast. Given its position at the end of the tour run it is most likely a WDR studio recording / TV filming rather than a public concert.

'9. Rockpalast Rocknacht', Grugahalle
Roger Chapman & The Shortlist
Norbertstraße 2, Essen, Germany
One of the flagship Rockpalast nights of the decade. Broadcast live via Eurovision to an estimated 25 million viewers across 14 countries. Released officially as Live at Grugahalle Essen 1981 (Repertoire, 2014).

Tour stats — Billboard (5 December 1981) reported Lippmann + Rau's tally for the tour this Rockpalast date opened: "Roger Chapman and the Short List pulled audiences of between 2,000 and 3,000 a night on his 26-date tour which ended Dec. 2." A strong European-market performance for Chapman in the Hyenas Only Laugh for Fun album-release year — the Grugahalle's Rockpalast Rocknacht slot was prime-time German rock TV exposure before the tour went into its civic-hall / Stadthalle / university-Audimax run through November.

Tour-wind-down context — Billboard (5 December 1981) quoted promoters Lippmann + Rau: "Roger Chapman and the Short List pulled audiences of between 2,000 and 3,000 a night on his 26-date tour which ended Dec. 2." Mannheim Rosengarten was the last currently-catalogued show before the tour's 2 December closing night — eight or so 1981 tour dates beyond this timeline's current inventory remain as recovery candidates from the Lippmann + Rau diary. TOUR CLOSES

Wednesday · 2 December 1981

Chapman & Shortlist 1981 Tour — closing date

Chapman & The Shortlist 1981 European tour closes — per concert promoters Lippmann + Rau to Billboard (5 December 1981): "Roger Chapman and the Short List pulled audiences of between 2,000 and 3,000 a night on his 26-date tour which ended Dec. 2." The Lippmann + Rau Frankfurt office — the same Fritz Rau / Horst Lippmann promotion that had handled Family's 1970-73 West German tours and the ongoing Chapman solo relationship since the 1979 Live in Hamburg era — positioned the tour as Chapman's strongest yet on German soil, with the Markthalle Hamburg three-night stand (2-4 November) captured for the He Was… She Was… You Was… We Was… live album. The 26-date total exceeds the ~18 shows currently logged on this timeline (16 Germany + 1 UK + 2 unassigned) — eight or so dates remain as recovery candidates from the Lippmann + Rau tour-diary archive and the Billboard / Sounds 1981 concert-listing pages.
